Group digipak

As a group, we were presented with the task to create a final digipak together using Photoshop. As part of this task, we had to produce 6 different slides including a front cover, CD, back cover, welcome not and two images, all in aim to promote the artists album. To start, we reviewed each others and discussed which elements from each others we liked and believed to be conventional and therefore appealing for our target audience of females aged 16-25. We each compared our own individual digipaks to analyse which aspects we thought to be effective and which didn't approve of. To do this, we held a group meeting where we took it in turns to analyse each persons individual digipak design so that everyone had a say in the outcome of our final digipak. As a group we come to the decision that we should create our group digipak as a combination of each members individual digiapk designs so that we would all have an equal input into our final digipak design we would submit as a group effort. We therefore provided each other with strengths and weaknesses of our digipak designs which assisted us with making a decision of who's slides to use on our digipak. In addition to this, discussing our digipak designs meant that we were able to increase how conventional our final product was and how well it linked in to our music video and magazine advert.

Emma's digipak:

What do you like about the digipak and how is the digipak conventional to your music genre?

I like that Emma has used 3 main artist images that allows the audience to engage with the artist due to  the eye contact. This allows the audience to engage with my artist and therefore begin to build a relationship with her. On the other 2 slides, Emma has incorporated an image of Daisy where she is looking away from the audience which allows her feelings to be hidden behind her music which would entice the audience to listen to her music to discover more about her. In addition to this I like the recurring theme of the brick wall background that Emma has included on 4 of her slides. This is because it is highly conventional to the indie genre and provides a visual link between all of her products. Emma's digipak design is conventional to the Indie genre for many reasons. She has selected a brick wall background in which is noticed in Nina Nesbitt's tour poster in which she is stood in front of it. Her choice of background emits an urban feel yet conforms to Indie conventions because it is evident in another artist of the genre's visual works. Emma's fonts are also very conventional because they are all the same and aren't too daring and instead simplistic, thus engaging our target audience.

How can the digipak be improved?

Although I enjoyed looking at Emma's interpretation of a digipak for our Indie artist, there are a few things I believe can be altered to fulfil the brief of a solely conventional product of our chosen genre. I would firstly add an effect on the images she has included of the artist which would improve the quality of them whilst ensuring they are coherent with the music video as we have altered the contrast.

Ella's digipak:

What do you like about the digipak and how is the digipak conventional to your music genre?

I particularly like Ella's CD design because I believe it is extremely visually appealing for our target audience. The daisy design has evidently been edited efficiently and she has taken time to cut around each image clearly. The use of the daisy design provides a coherent link between our products as our artists name is Daisy. Additionally, I like the two of the images Ella decided to incorporate of our artist. The first is the image on the front cover as the artist is providing the audience with eye contact and thus entices the audience to engage with the artist and therefore begin to build a relationship with her before even listening to her music. This image will also attract audiences attention to purchase the digipak and listen to the artists music. The second image I particularly like is on the image slide which presents the artist playing the guitar and looking down at it, completely absorbed in her music. This image is effective because it provides the audience with mystery regarding the artists personality and music and therefore makes them want to invest in the product further. Additionally, another conventional element of Ella's digipak is the fact the artist is seen playing an acoustic guitar and wearing indie style clothing, thus engaging our target audience further because they will not only be enticed into her music but her personality and style too, increasing success.

How can the digipak be improved?

There are a number of elements I like about Ella’s digipak, however, there are also a few aspects that she could alter to improve the visual appeal and how conventional her overall digipak is. Ella is missing a welcome note on one of her slides which would improve how successful the digipak is as it would allow the audience to feel engaged with the audience as they are given the opportunity to read a personal message from herself.  Additionally, I think that Ella should use the same image effect on each slide of her digipak. This is so that the whole digipak would be visually coherent and therefore more visually appealing for the audience. By doing so, it would increase the professional appearance of her digipak and overall the likely success of it enticing consumers to purchase it.

Millie's digipak:

What do you like about the digipak and how is the digipak conventional to your music genre?

The thing I like most about Millie's digipak is the use of the acoustic guitar on every slide.
Not only does this result in a direct link between all slides but also to our music video and magazine advert, thus, serving the fundamental purpose of allowing all 3 products to fuse into 1.  The use of acoustic guitar is very highly conventional element of the indie genre and therefore increases how visually conventional the digipak is. I also believe that Millie’s choice of what image to incorporate of our artist into her song title digipak slide will highly engage the audience. This is  mainly due to the fact that our artist is providing eye contact to the audience, thus engaging them with the artist and allows them to build a relationship with her before even listening to her music. Additionally, the artist is playing the acoustic guitar in this image which increases the conventionality of this particular slide and also adds a performance element to the slide which relates to the fact the slide provides the audience with the titles of each song on the album, linking to the slide.

How can the digipak be improved?

Although there are many elements of Millie’s digipak that I like, there are a few changes that I believe she could make to improve how conventional and visually appealing her digipak is as a whole. To improve the visuals of Millie’s back cover design I think that she needs to improve on the layout. This is because the song titles are not clear to the audience due to the fact they are randomly arranged , therefore not presenting it clearly to the audience to quickly refer to when selecting a song once purchased. If Millie was to alter the font and size of the text and rearrange the song titles into a more organised fashion then the overall visual appearance of her back cover design would be greatly improved. In order for Millie to fully improve her digipak, she needs to include another picture slide as there are only 5 slides that form her digipak. If she was to add just another slide it would increase the success as 1 product and also enable the artist to flourish as a result.
